Magnets That Think And Feel

Published: 31 Mar 2023

The MARCH team at Sheffield recently finished a short project, titled Magnets that think and feel, funded by the Sir Henry Royce Insitute Materials Accelerator Challenge Programme (https://www.royce.ac.uk/materials-challenge-accelerator-programme).

We investigated how temperature influences our arrays of nanomagnets, and how this can be used as a direct method to encode information into a system. We were able to show how our nanoring system acts as a smart sensor, learning variations in temperature, and even predicting future fluctuations!

Using a peltier cell, we are able to modulate the temperature of our system up to 100 degrees

We can then sense the effect that this has on the system, by probing it with a small rotating magnetic field and mesauring the system resistance

This shift in our response allows our system to 'understand' the temperature changes!
