Research Project
Additive layer manufacturing of magnetic materials
Enhancing magnetic properties through additive layer manufacturing offers exciting uses in applications such as sensors, motors and transformers
3D printing reduces waste and cost of manufacturing in comparison to traditional methods such as casting and machining bulk materials.
A desktop metal-bound-deposition printer has been used to print stainless steel 17/4ph by using a polymer binder which is fused in injection moulding and printed by extrusion process. The polymer binder allows magnetic materials to be printed without excessively heating for extrusion. Design flexibility allows control over magnetisation direction and demagnetisation.
