Magnetic Sensing, Cooling and MEMs

Functional magnetic materials can be used for a wide range of applications such as magnetic sensors, actuators, MEMs and cooling systems.

By using their functional properties such as magnetostriction (change in magnetisation with applied strain) and thermo-magnetic behaviour (change in magnetisation with temperature), soft magnetic devices (where large changes in magnetisation are seen for small applied magnetic fields) can be created that can, for instance, cool electric motors, measure damage to aircraft or monitor water quality.
