Alex worked in the group as a PDRA for Dr Tom Hayward as part of the EPSRC project “From Stochasticity to Functionality: Probabilistic Computation with Magnetic Nanowires”. They joined the FMM group at the end of 2019 and finished March 2025. They were previously a PhD student in Prof Russell Cowburns group at the University of Cambridge, supervised by Dr Amalio Fernández-Pacheco looking at strain based control of synthetic antiferromagnets.

Alex's work in Sheffield was primarily on making use of stochastic behaviour in nanomagnetic materials for neuromorphic computing; they studied magnetic nanowires and superparamagnets using a variety of fabrication, characterisation and modelling techniques.

They have now moved out of academia for a software engineering role at Amodo Design.
